There are different kind of backup software which may backup your files and folders but also whole hardrive in image format. Imagine in a situation when you computer crashes or lets say your HDD is dead in such cases you would like to have image backup which will restore your computer within hours. You will not need to start from OS installation and imagine the pain of updating them not only that you have to reinstall all the software you have been using.
I like to have whole HDD backed up but that also takes time. There are tons of software which offer you this facility some are : Acronis (Best), Norton, Nero etc. I prefer acronis.
PS: if you have external HDD look for the backup software came with it.
