Cell phones experience - 2007/03/15 23:38
Hi folks. A lot of people these days consider cell phone to be essential. Lets discuss your experiences with various companies and particular phone models. I believe the discussion can be broken into following issues. The rates and plans, extra charges company prefer to hide, strength of the signal within the campus of UofG and nearby area, specific phone models which are good/bad based on your own experince, roaming, etc. Please, share your experience.
I will share my experience with Virgin (www.vmobile.ca). People from UK know it very well, it is big company their. They settled in Canada couple of years ago and so far have best prepaid plans (in Canada of cause). Their network is CDMA (in contrast to GSM networks such as Rogers and Fido). It means if you got phone from them, you will not able to switch to GSM company in future and use same phone. They do not require to sign contracts at all, and you will have to buy a phone for a full price. They do not have any extra fees either, such as "network access fee" charged by others. I have prepaid plan, it is 25 c/min, plus extra 25 c/min if you call long distance within Canada. Another good feature - if you top up your account by large sum at once, there will be no need to top up again for a long time. For example, I deposited 100 dollars and it lasts for year. Additionally, there is free voice mail and many other free features you normally pay for with others companies. Most recently, they poped up with verios decent plans. Bad thing is that signal strenth isn't good over the campus. I get around 20% in the buildings (UC, NSC, McN, did not test others), around 40-50% outside. Too sad, it does not work in the basements of UC and McN. Lower signal normally means your battery will be dead much faster if you kep your phone on all the time. Exellent signal in the Stone Road Mall and everywhere on the north of Guelph. My phone is cheapest Nokia, that model is not available anymore. But there is newer very similar one for 59 dollars. Check www.vmobile.ca It wil be very good if other students with Virgin phone can inform about signal streangth in other areas/buildings of the campus. Please, mention your phone model since the signal pick up depends on the model sometimes a lot.
Hope to hear from other people about cell phone experinces. There are couple of new companies appeared recently. It is SearsConnect and PC mobile. All people I know have no idea what these are doing. So, here we go.
Cheers, and lets keep connected! Oleg
