First thing you need to do is to go to the US Consulate website and book for an appointment. You will have to pay by credit card to book the appointment online.

Once you have the appointment, you have to be there as earlier as you can, because when you go there it is first come first serve basis, not on the time of appointment basis.
Also I suggest that you take documents to prove that you are a student of the university, and indicate the date of completion of your program. You will also have to take some photographs. Earlier, they had a machine at the embassy premises which needed $5 bills.
If you are covered under UHIP, it is normally advisable to enhance your coverage before you leave the country.
