I would suggest to checkout Dell.ca you can configure the specification. Also Dell has better service and warranty plans.
A good system depends on your purpose, If you need for gaming then you need to have good video card along with computer muscle power. In my opinion a good laptop is
(1) Light weight
(2) longer battery
(3) Screen not bigger than 14" wide format is advantageous. I will never buy bigger screen in laptop cause it reduces mobility and more prone to breakage and drains power too. But of'course opinion varies...
(4) Core Duo
(5) DVD writer
(6) Descent video card atleast 128MB dedicated RAM
(7) High FSB not less than 533
(8) Dual channel RAM atleast 1GB but recommending 2GB with Vista
(9) Try out VISTA
(10) Good warranty
