EVENT NUMBER 2: The War Resisters Support Campaign is a broad-based coalition of community, faith, labour and other organizations and individuals that have come together to support U.S. soldiers seeking asylum in Canada because they refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq.
The Campaign works on two fronts: we support the material needs of war resisters when they arrive in Canada; and we campaign to persuade the Canadian government to provide sanctuary for U.S. war resisters.
On Wednesday, November 22nd, at 8:30 p.m. in the Grad Lounge on the University of Guelph campus, there will be a CD release party by MC Mohommad Ali entitled, “Not in Our Name!” a benefit concert for the War Resisters Campaign.
There will be a performance from local social justice musician, Fellow Worker, along with a showing of “Let Them Stay”, a documentary about the war resisters. In addition, a US war resister will be in attendance to talk about the situation. After that, MC Mohammad Ali will break it down with socially conscious hip-hop. The evening will round up with local DJs playing music from around the world.
Cover for the event is $5-10 sliding scale with all profits from the album and performances, in support of the album, going directly to supporting the legal and/or material needs of U.S. War Resisters in Canada. For more information go to www.resisters.ca or www.myspace.com/mcmohammadali. Questions, please email Vicki Guzmán at laboursinger@yahoo.ca or call the War Resisters National Campaign Office at 416.598.1222
