Special Seminar : Live-cell Imaging of Cellulose Synthesis
The Dept of Plant Agriculture is pleased to announce that Dr. Christopher R Somerville of Stanford University will give a special campus seminar at 11am on Thurs, Feb 22nd, in Thornborough 1307. During this research seminar, Dr. Somerville will show beautiful images and movies of cellulose synthesis in progress, the world's most abundant organic compound.Refreshments will be served. Dr. Somerville is Professor of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Director, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Dept of Plant Biology, and Senior Editor, Science Magazine. After his seminar, Dr. Somerville will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate at the Winter OAC/OVC Convocation. Later in the evening, Dr. Somerville will give the Keynote Address at the first Department of Plant Agriculture Annual Retreat.
Biography: Dr. Christopher Somerville is perhaps the world's most influential living basic research plant biologist. He pioneered Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system for plant molecular genetics. His efforts led to the sequencing of the first plant genome in 2000. His lab has analyzed the entire fatty acid biosynthetic pathway; first demonstrated that plastic can be produced in plants; has conducted pioneering research in our understanding of cellulose biosynthesis; and is interested in the opportunities but also problems of using plants for cellulosic ethanol production. Dr. Somerville recently co-shared the $800,000 2006 Balzar Prize from the President of Italy, and has received numerous honorary doctorates and scientific awards, including the Schull Award from the American Society of Plant Physiologists (1987), and the Mendel Medal from the Genetics Society of America. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Somerville received his PhD from the University of Alberta and has frequently advised the governments of Canada and Alberta. Readers have left 4 comments. No.1 Untitled
